2 Corinthians 1:8-10 (New International Version)
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers,
about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under
great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired
even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But
this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises
the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will
deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver
us,
One thing that seems to be
somewhat lacking in the church today is trust in God. Yes, we
believe that He saved us from our sins, but do we really trust Him to
keep the other promises He's made? Do we have the mustard seed's worth
of faith necessary to move mountains? I know I don't. And yet, it is
that very knowledge that I don't have the faith that keeps me from
obtaining it - from having that strong belief in God that was credited
to Abraham as righteousness. If I would just trust God to do what He
already said He would, anything would be possible.
Every time I am able to shed my unbelief, something
amazing happens. For example, I am going on a Work & Witness trip over
Christmas break. When the time came that I needed to confirm whether or
not I was going, I was still very unsure because the trip cost a lot of
money. So I asked God if I should go, and, after receiving a firm yes,
asked about how I was supposed to get the money. Well, God just told me
to trust Him and asked why I didn't think he would provide the means to
do something that He told me to do. So I forced myself not to worry
about the money, but, thinking that perhaps this was how God would
provide, went to get information about doing fundraisers. But before I
could even start trying to raise anything, God had a few people come
tell me they wanted to donate some money that ended up covering the entire amount!
In Jeremiah 17, God says that the one who trusts in Him
is like a tree growing by a stream. This tree doesn't have to worry
about heat or droughts; its leaves are always green and it always bears
fruit.
When you trust in God, he'll always give you whatever
you need to do His work, and just to live. "Look at the birds of the
air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
Mt 6:26 (NIV)
